__NOTOC__ Each [[Avatar]] has one fixed name, assigned during [[Signup]], which can never be changed. This is to prevent [[Griefing]]. The only way to change your name is to cancel your [[Account]] and start from scratch with a new one. Or you can create an [[Alt]]. ==Avatar Last Name== During [[Signup]], Second Life will propose a list of last names for your [[Avatar]]. You must select a last name from this list. The list of available last names changes regularly. Old ones are retired manually after being picked in the high hundreds, on average. Generally speaking, once retired, a last name is never revived, and no new Residents can choose it. New last names are continually added, in batches. Some batches have been on a theme, such as hockey players, economists, food, and rock stars, and some are without a theme. In some special circumstances last names have been created on request. One such exception is for members of academic institutions, so they can be recognized as such while conducting studies in Second Life. Exceptions are also sometimes made for those with a real-world, professional reason to assert their actual identity [[Inworld]]. ==Avatar First Name== You can choose any first name you want for your [[Avatar]]. ==Display of your Avatar Name== Whenever you are [[Inworld]], the name of your Avatar is displayed to other [[Resident]]s (and to yourself) by a small sign over your head. There is no way for you to turn off the display of your [[Avatar]]'s name to others. This also is to prevent [[Griefing]]. ==See Also== *[[Avatar]] [[Category:Avatar]]
