Appearance
From SLuserguide
The Appearance of your Avatar can be completely customized, by:
- Replacing your entire current Avatar (together with all its Clothes) by a Demonstration Avatar, by a Default Avatar, or by any other saved Outfit
- Replacing individual Body Parts or Clothes that are currently Worn with others stored in your Inventory
- Modifying Worn Body Parts or Clothes using the Appearance Window (if the Creator has given you Permission to edit them)
- Creating new Body Parts and Clothes
- Attaching specially created Objects to your Avatar
Change to another Demonstration Avatar
During Signup you are given a choice of Demonstration Avatars. You are then born Inworld in the form of the particular Demonstration Avatar that you have chosen. However, once you are Inworld you can change to any other Demonstration Avatar available in the Library. For how to do this, see Demonstration Avatar.
Change to a Default Avatar
To completely change your avatar, you can also revert to a Default Avatar. For how to do this, see Default Avatar.
Change to any other saved Outfit
You can also completely change your Avatar by putting on a different saved Outfit. See the page Outfit for a description of how to use Outfits.
Replace Individual Body Parts or Clothes
You can freely replace individual Body Parts or Clothes items with others. The difference between them is that:
- Body Parts cannot be taken off, but can only be replaced by other Body Parts.
- Clothes items can be put on, taken off, or replaced by other Clothes items
Note that you can also put on Objects, many of which can play the role of a Body Part or Clothes item, but which are handled rather differently by the Second Life software. An example is Prim Hair. See the section below on "Attach Objects to your Avatar", or the page Attach Object.
The Body Parts and Clothes available to you include:
- Items automatically placed in your Inventory at Signup
- Items in your Inventory which you have received as Gifts from other Residents, or have purchased from Residents or Vendors
- Items in your Inventory which you have made yourself
- Items available to everyone in the Library
There are several ways to place a Body Part or Clothes item on your Avatar (thereby replacing the currently Worn item). You can either:
- Left-click on the item in Inventory, hold down the mouse button, drag the item to your Avatar, and release the mouse button
- Double-click on the item in Inventory
- Right-click on the item in Inventory, and select "Wear" from the menu
All these ways of putting on a Body Part or Clothes item work whether the Appearance Window is open or closed.
Note that a Worn Body Part or Clothes item remains in your Inventory, and the word Worn in parentheses becomes appended to the item's name.
Take Off Clothes
To take off a Clothes item, you can either:
- Right-click on your Avatar to open your Avatar Pie Menu, select "Take Off", then "Clothes", and then the Clothes item you want to remove
- Open the Edit Menu, select "Take off clothing", and then select the item to remove
- Open the Appearance Window, select the tab of the clothing item you want to remove, and click on the button "Take Off".
Edit Worn Body Parts or Clothes
To edit Worn Body Part or Clothes items, open the Appearance Window by either:
- Right-clicking on your Avatar to open the My Avatar Pie Menu, and select "Appearance"
- Open the Edit Menu, and select "Appearance
Note that the Appearance Window will only open after your Avatar has fully loaded (it stays shut as long as your Avatar appears as a Particle Cloud).
Also note that you may be unable to edit certain Worn Body Parts or Clothes. In order for you to be able to edit them, their Creator has to set the appropriate Permissions on them.
With the Appearance Window open, select the tab of the Worn Body Part or the Clothes item that you want to edit. The selected item can then be edited by using:
- Built-in sliders to change the item's dimensions
- Color choices
- Texture choices
The following buttons are found at the bottom of each Tab of the Appearance Window:
- Save: save the changes to the item
- Save as: allows you to give a new name to the item when you save the changes
- Revert: undo all changes made to the current Body Part or Clothes item since it was last saved
The following buttons are found at the bottom of the Appearance Window itself:
- Make Outfit: save the entire current appearance as an Outfit
- Save All: save the changes made to all Worn Body Parts and Clothes items you have on
- Close: close the Appearance Window
Change the Sex of your Avatar
The sex of your Avatar resides in fact in the Shape, which is one of the four Body Parts.
To change your Avatar's sex, open the Shape Tab within the Appearance Window.
In the lower-center of the Shape Tab there is a small box containing radio buttons for "Female" or "Male". Click the corresponding radio button to switch to the gender you want.
Create new Clothes
You can also create new Clothes for your Avatar. For how to do this, see Create Clothes.
Attach Objects to your Avatar
You may also attach specially created Objects to your avatar to change your appearance.
Some of these Objects play the role of a Body Part or Clothes item, but are are handled rather differently by the Second Life software. Examples are:
For how to attach Objects to your Avatar, see Attach Object.
Detach Objects from your Avatar
To detach an object from your Avatar, you can either:
- Right-click on the object to open the Avatar Pie Menu, select "Take Off", then select either "Detach" (if the Object is attached to your body) or "HUD" (if the Object is attached to a Hud
- Open the Edit Menu and select Detach Object
However, what you want to remove may in fact be a Body Part or Clothes item, instead of an attached Object. For instance, you may think the hair you want to remove is Prim Hair, made out of Objects, whereas it is really a Body Part type of Hair. To test whether it is an Object, try right-clicking on it to seeing if you can select "Detach".
Find everything currently Worn by your Avatar
Trying to identify in Inventory the Body Parts and Clothes that are Worn by your Avatar can be confusing.
You can identify all items currently Worn in one of two ways. The first is to:
- Open your Inventory (click on the Inventory button at bottom-right of the screen on the Toolbar, or open the View Menu and select Inventory)
- Find the search bar near the top of the Inventory window, and type in "(worn)". Everything you are wearing (Body Parts, Clothes items, and attached Objects, will show up in bold with "(worn)" next to its name.
The second way to see all items currently Worn by your Avatar is to:
- Open the Edit Menu and select Detach Object
- The list for Detach Object will show all of the Attachment Points on your Avatar that currently have an Object attached to them.
